	When you want to buy a tree or shrub you probably do a lot of thinking about the price. But instead of decreasing in value with age &mdash; like home equipment or automobiles &#8211; ornamentals usually increase in value with maturity. So they are investments.</p>
<p>Home with large shade trees will sell faster and bring a higher price than those on a bare lot. Realtors and contractors realize this. Insurance companies often include trees and shrubs in their policies knowing that ornamentals &mdash; especially trees &mdash; help equalize and stabilize property values. So when you think of landscaping your home &mdash; consider the value the trees and shrubs will have several years from now. What they cost today is an investment in your future.</p>
<p>If you sometimes end your flower garden planting with several packets of expensive seed left over and no place to plant it, you know the importance of planning ahead. Planning your garden before ordering seeds is the best procedure to follow. Make your plan and a list of the plants you want to grow. Match the two, and place your orders as your plan and desires match. If you did not make a measured plan of your garden last year, your first step is to go out and measure it. Draw your plan to scale, making a half-inch on your plan equal a foot in the garden.</p>
<p>Now make a list of the plants you want to grow and the amount of each. Knowing how much space you have in your garden, you can tell if you have too much, or not enough, in your list. You may find that you will need to substitute, since you cannot grow everything. But remember that you can grow many things if you realize that annuals and perennials planted in the border should be used mainly for aesthetic purposes. Growing a special cutting garden &mdash; so you won&#39;t destroy the overall beauty of your garden by cutting flowers. This will also allow you to grow a larger variety of plants.</p>
<p>One vegetable that is invaluable to a cook is the onion. They&#39;re good to eat raw in salads, sandwiches, or from the relish tray. They add flavor to soups, sauces, and stews. Because onions are so widely used&#8230; and because they are easy to grow&#8230; they are mightily popular with gardeners. Onions should be planted in early spring as soon as the garden can be prepared.</p>
<p>They should have fertile, welldrained soil of sandy loam. And they should be planted in full sun. For early green onions, select good-sized bulblets. They are called &#8220;sets.&#8221; Almost any onion variety can be planted including the perennial, or tree onion. Prepare a loose seed bed and plant the sets two inches deep and two inches apart.</p>
<p>If you want onions to grow to maturity, the best variety is Ebenezer. It won&#39;t go to seed in the summer. It will mature before fall frosts and will keep well in storage. For this variety, choose small bulblets and plant them four inches apart. Onions may also be grown from transplants. Mild flavored varieties such as sweet Spanish or Utah Valencia are good. They will tolerate light frosts, but it is better to plant them after hard freezes are past. Set these plants in the ground about four inches apart.</p>
<p>Houseplants may need repotting when roots appear on the soil surface and protrude out drainage holes. Invert the plants, tap the containers at the edge of a bench and remove the plants with soil from the pots. If the soil is covered with a network of roots, consider repotting. According to a Pennsylvania State University correspondence course on houseplants, repotting can be done any season, but a preferred time is when plants begin active growth in early spring.</p>
<p>Begonias, ferns and other plants grown for their foliage need repotting every two or three years. Select containers with diameters one-third to one-half the plants height. A begonia 12 inches tall needs a pot 4 to 6 inches in diameter. Provide drainage in the bottoms of the containers. A pot six inches in diameter needs one inch of broken crockery or gravel. When repotting orchids and cacti, fill the pots one-third full of drainage material before putting in soil.</p>
<p>Take plants from old pots. Remove one-half inch of old soil. Re-compact the roots and hold in place in new container. Line the pot with new soil and fill to within three-fourths inch of the rim. Firm the soil, apply water and place plants in shade for a few days.</p>
